Matt plugged a destination into the carshare and explained, “Kai isn’t the only one who started having flying dreams after almost drowning. Every time I’ve been able to verify someone’s flying dreams, that person had survived a near-death experience that involved the ocean.”

“Verified? How many people could prove what they saw came from a flying dream?” Wend asked.

A staticky feeling grew between them and made Wend think Matt was going to lie. Then he took a deep breath and said, “Six that I’ve tested and proved to myself personally. More that I can’t verify, and none of that is really mine to tell.”

Wend wasn’t sure if the static dissipating meant Matt had decided to tell the truth or if he’d learned to hide lies from people like Wend. If they were right and the emotion involved mattered, people might train themselves to block the relevant emotions. But Matt had made it sound like multiple people at Friendsgiving sensed Shelly’s lie. It seemed likely that more of them had flying dreams than just Kai. If so, Matt probably knew more about those aspects of Wend than Wend did.

As the driverless carshare pulled over and parked by a cluster of trees and a circle of benches, Matt said, “I thought we should visit at least one viewpoint before dark. Not that we’re on the right side of the island to see sunset, but the coast here is striking, even in evening shadows.”

Stepping out of the car, Wend heard ocean all around them, or at least on three sides. They walked past what seemed to be a gathering or outdoor teaching area and watched waves crashing less than twenty meters out to each side. Ahead of them a narrow strip of land stretched into the sea.

As they walked forward, Matt said, “The Kauhola lighthouse used to stand here. Long before that, King Kamehameha I used it as a family retreat. Some say he taught his wife to surf nearby.”

There were cliffs and crashing waves on all sides, but no people aside from the four in their group. The wind ruffled their hair like gentle fingers but smelled salty and fresh; Wend could have been back at sea.

“Tourists mostly go to the Pololu Valley Lookout. It’s worth seeing, but better when you have time to hike down to the black sand beach,” Kai said.

Wend realized the light was fading and the sun setting even as they studied the curving bay to their left. “Where were we before?”

Kai came to stand beside Wend, studied the coast and then pointed confidently. It wasn’t that far as a bird flew or a turtle swam.

Wend looked down at the rocks and crashing surf beneath where they stood and decided there was no safe way to collect a quick water sample, even with the rope Kai had carried before. “What’s it look like to you, as someone who grew up here?”

“This part hasn’t changed like down by Hilo.” Kai stilled as they studied the coast. “I don’t remember visiting this exact spot as a kid, but I’ve taught kids and college students here recently.
